Nepal - A country of amazing diversity

Nepal is blessed with an incredible diversity of natural beauty and a consequent opulence of cultural varieties. Situated between China to the North and India to the South, Nepal is a landlocked country with interesting customs and old-age architecture. From West to East it is only 885 kilometers in length, whilst its breath never exceeds 241 kilometers. And yet in this short distance, it rises from a mere 70 meter above sea level in the south to 8,848 meters, the highest point in the world in the North. It is this dramatic topographic variation that makes Nepal such an enchanting and exhilarating tourist destination.

Nepal is divided into three geographical regions:

  • The Terai region
  • The middle hills region
  • The mountain region

Himalayas Nepal has one of the largest collections of wildlife parks and reserves in the world. Rara National Park is in the West, Sagarmatha is in the East and there are numerous jungle parks in the South. The most exciting feature of the Terai Low lands are the three wildlife sanctuaries - Royal Bardia, Royal Chitwan and Tiger Tops which are home to the Royal Bengal Tiger and the Asian one-horned Rhinoceros. Kathmandu Valley consists of the three main cities of great historic, artistic and cultural interest. Kathmandu Valley (the capital city of the country), Patan and Bhaktapur are situated at an altitude of 1,338 meters above the sea level. The Kathmandu Valley covers an area of 218 sq. miles. The beautiful valley of Kathmandu, is located in the center of the country. The Himalayas, often referred to as "The Roof of the World", stretch along the northern border. Eight of the world's highest peaks, all above 8,000 meters, are to be found in this region. The magical names of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Annapurna thrill and inspire even the most experience mountaineer or trekker. The Himalayan mountain range includes some 2,400 km long and 200-300 km wide. Those who have attempted to conquer these peaks have made Nepal famous throughout the world.

WINTER (December - February) This season is noted for occasional snowfall only at higher elevations. Hence it is ideal for trekking at lower elevations, generally below 3000 meters.

SPRING (March - May) Different varieties of wild flowers, especially the rhododendrons make the hillside above 5000 meters a haunting paradise during this season. It is mildly warm at lower elevations and at higher elevation over 4000 meters the mountain views are excellent and temperature is quite moderate.

These times are blessed for the keen botanist as the higher valleys and meadows blossom with flowers and lush vegetation. It is recommended to carry insect repellent when trekking during Summer months.
